Selling T-Shirts

Niche Decisions

When it comes to selling shirts via Facebook Ads, you will more than likely have as much losing campaigns as winning campaigns.

Probably more losing campaigns actually, your winning campaigns will just be a much bigger margin than the hit you take with losing campaigns.

In most cases, once you turn on a Newsfeed ad, you want to watch it until it hits $20 - $25 spent and then look at your sales.

If you're selling a shirt at $19.99 and you've spent $20 on ads, you want to see at least 4 or 5 sales and if you don't get that much then you can pretty much call that $20 gone and the campaign a throwaway.

You'd be surprised how many people will come across your newsfeed ad, clearly see your shirt, like it, want it, proceed to click the “CLICK HERE TO BUY” button, and then...do nothing, not buy a thing and just leave you with a Facebook bill.

This may not sound like to big of a deal but it definitely is to some people when those clicks add up and 50 people do that exact same thing, then you're left with a bill and didn't even pull a profit.

You can just promote the heck out of the shirt until the campaign ends and if you had a winning campaign, awesome, but if not, oh well, move on.

First, you want to choose a niche. A lot of people are doing the sports niche, which is a great niche.

It's pretty crowded with people but there is still a lot of room for people to come in and pull a nice profit targeting teams, specific players, specific events, controversial events, etc.

Don't trap yourself into a box, though, sports aren't the only niche that you can work this with, remember while everyone else is focusing on one niche, there are other niches that are wide open and people are waiting to buy shirts about it.

Sports is a very passionate niche and people tend to buy in this niche, but keep your mind open to music related stuff(song/artist quotes), positive thinking quotes, second amendment folks, etc).

Sport is a good niche to start with if you haven't ever tried anything with the spring, so that's what we'll talk about today.

There are many different routes you can take in the sports niche, to keep it simple for this example let's choose and specific player.

We'll go for...Derrick Rose, who plays for the Bulls. I want to do someone I've never done before.

So the first step is to come up with a simple but catchy idea based around Derrick Rose. A good base to stick with is coming up with some sort of rhyme scheme.

I've never done a campaign around Derrick Rose, so I haven't put any good thought into it but, I just came up with something simple...”There's the pro's, then there's Rose”

Nothing spectacular but it sounds cool, and mixing something that sounds cool with a decent design = $$$.

Designing Money

This doesn't have to be some huge, amazing design for these shirts, something that looks good will sell to people that are passionate about the niche.

If you are decent with photoshop, you can do the designs yourself to save money, but I know a lot of people aren't good at designing, and that's ok.

There isn't a trick to making a design that will sell, it's simply about making something that looks good on clothing, making sure the fonts match the theme, making sure it's lined up well, the colors look good on the shirt, the message is likable, etc.

Once you come up with a catchy little slogan, half of your work is done, which is why I told you to think of something catchy.

For this example, we've got “There's the Pros, then there's Rose” for a little catchy slogan. If you are doing a player or team, it is pretty natural to use the team colors with your design.

There will never be a shortage of designers to hire to whip you up some designs for your shirts based on the niche you are basing your shirt off of.

And of course, a nice option to start with would be to take advantage of the upgrade “gold” offer and get your first 3 designs done by yours truly in any niche and get off to a booming start with some quality designs that I think would convert based on my experience.

So I'm going to go throw together a really quick mockup of a design and come back, this isn't going to be a full out design, just something to use as an example below.

After you complete your design saved as a .PNG file like below.
Selling T-Shirts

So say this was an official design that you wanted to use for a shirt. Heading over to teespring.com, you'd upload the design, create your shirt, and launch your campaign, receiving your promotion link.
Selling T-Shirts

Here's what the design above looks like on a shirt.

Although this is a really simple design I did in a few minutes without even trying, it still has a chance of selling if it's seen by enough Derrick Rose fans. I would put more “design” up here if I were going at this seriously.

Once you've completely designed your shirt and it looks good, choose how long you want the campaign to run and then go ahead and launch your campaign!

You will be asked by the spring to enter a unique tag that will be used as your link, once you get your link, you can head over to bit.ly and get a shortened link.

Now it's time to promote your shirt and hopefully get a ton of sales and CASH!!!

At this moment, the majority of people break off down the path to your left over to the FB Ads section and create a Newsfeed ad, target Derrick Rose fans, launch the ad and sit back and wait until they spend $20 - $25.

If they don't see at least 4 sales by the time they've spent $20 in ads, they might as well kiss that $20 goodbye.

Let's take a right ahead and get into the step #3!

Traffic Chasing

Facebook Ads is quite different, at this point, people who are using newsfeed ads really don't have to do much of anything else besides watch their ad and see if the shirt is making a profit.

Since you're not doing newsfeed ads, you won't be able to just finish your shirt design, launch your campaign and get instant traffic with the push of a button.

There are a few different kinds of fan pages and I've learned along the way to tag them with these different levels.

Peak Level fan pages: You can look on a “Peak Level” fan page and tell within a few minutes if they are monetizing their page. As a marketer, you should easily be able to notice promotions on their page, CPA stuff, Affiliate offers, contests, and of course, make sure you look for any the spring posts.

Mid Level fan pages: You can look on a “Mid-Level” fan page and tell that they are perhaps “trying” to monetize their page and have posted maybe a CPA offer, or an affiliate offer here and there BUT they DON'T have any trace of the spring anywhere on their page.

Ground Level fan pages: This is the ideal place to start and the easiest place to get campaigns going quickly.

These are pages that are successfully social but don't have barely anything in sight that would suggest they are doing a good job monetizing the page and making money from it.

So getting back to the core here, my niche is Derrick Rose who plays in the NBA. I've got a shirt made, and my link ready to go.

Next, I need to go and look for pages related to my niche. Easy, just go to Facebook and put any related keywords in the search bar and click on Find all pages:

Now you will get a list of fan pages that have to do with your keyword, other than “Derrick Rose”, if I were really going deep into this, I would also look up other keywords like the Chicago Bulls.

Once you get to your list of fan pages, you might as well stay away from any fan page that has a crap load of fans to save time as they are all probably going to be Peak Level fan pages.

Also, pay attention to “these people also like..” which will show you more pages that might match your niche.

Here's the exact process to repeat for each page you find:

Go to the fan page, click on “message”.

Now, this is important,  I will show you the right way that will return good results.

Short, stabby sentences. Quick questions. Simple copy.
Now, as soon as the page puts up the post and you see it live, send them another message like this:

Send them $5 via Paypal and tell them to click on BOOST on the status update and choose $5.

Once they pay for a $5 boost, take a deep breath because you've just launched a campaign! Traffic will start coming in and all you have to do from this point is wait for sales to start coming in!

Keep a close eye on the status update to monitor how many likes, comments and shares you are getting. Keep an eye on the comments and look closely for any people leaving suggestions about kinds of shirts they would buy for ideas.
